For Immediate Release: Wednesday, August 19th, 2015 Contact: Claude Burfect, burfe2@gmail.com, 206-719-0728 Seattle King County NAACP and Local Community Leaders to Hold Dedication and Memorial Service for Charleston 9 Establish Memorial Site in Martin Luther King, Jr. Park Seattle, WA--On Saturday, August 22, 2015 at 3:00 PM, the Seattle King County NAACP, the United Black Christian Clergy, First AME Church, the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, and Afri-PAC will host a dedication and memorial ceremony in remembrance of the Charleston 9 murder victims whose lives were brutally taken in the name of racial hatred. Dozens of community members will gather as local groups establish a permanent living memorial for the Charleston 9 here in King County. The memorial site will include a planted tree surrounded by nine plants—each plant representing a slain victim. A cornerstone will be placed at the site as a reminder that racial hated is unacceptable and to ensure that we never to forget what happened in Charleston, SC. The tree in the middle represents our community coming together to say “Hate Won’t Win.” What: Dedication and Memorial Service for the Charleston 9 When: Saturday, August 22nd at 3:00 PM Where: Martin Luther King Jr. Park, 2800 Martin Luther King Avenue Who: Seattle King County NAACP, the United Black Christian Clergy, First AME Church, the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, Afri-PAC, and local community members # # # Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation’s oldest and largest nonpartisan civil rights organization.
